Bowl of Fruit, Violin and Bottle by Spanish art colossus Pablo Picasso, born on this day in 1881.
According to The Artist’s Palate by Frank Fedele (published by Dorling Kindersley) Picasso's favourite dish was Matelote d’Anguille – eel in brandy sauce {header photo}.
In his collection of prose Keeping On Keeping On (published by Profile Books) - documenting his years from 2005–2015 – much-loved English author and playwright Alan Bennett includes this entry for 25 October:
"I can never order Champagne in a restaurant. It’s not so much the appalling mark-up; it’s the way everybody turns to look when they hear the pop of the cork. Not the kind of attention I enjoy in any circumstances. Presumably they’re all wondering what is being celebrated, which in many cases is simply that someone has the wealth to drink Champagne in a restaurant."
